Restoration tremain5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Merivel exults in the king's fondness for his fool, and thinks he's been even more pampered when the king gives him a house, an income, and a bride, but soon the unraveling begins. While at court, Merivel indulges himself with food, drink and revelry and soon becomes a sort of court jester. Inadvertently, through no help from the doctor, the dog does survive. Merivel knows the only way to get ahead in England of this time is to please the king. In part one it depicts the newly-made physician Merivel's lucky break in being asked to treat the king's spaniel who is sick. There is humour in this, yes, but also much sadness. At first I thought this was going to be a comic, slice of life rendition of a young man's (Robert Merivel) rise as a sycophant of the king. I felt like I had been transported back in time to all the disagreeable muck and smells and ribaldry of the 1660s. Steeped in the voices and eccentricities of the age of Charles the second, Restoration: A Novel of Seventeenth-Century England is wonderful. ![]()

Thomas sowell economy5/27/2023 ![]() On leftist ideas: “The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. If most Americans do not stay in the same broad income bracket for even a decade, their repeatedly changing “class” makes class itself a nebulous concept.” ( Source) On economic class: “What sense would it make to classify a man as handicapped because he is in a wheelchair today, if he is expected to be walking against in a month and competing in track meets before the year is out? Yet Americans are given “class” labels on the basis of their transient location in the income stream. On healthcare: “It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, and medication somehow think that we can afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, medication and a government bureaucracy to administer it.” ( Source) ![]() That is one of the few things that might discourage politicians from being big spenders.” On government spending: “Elections should be held on April 16th-the day after we pay our income taxes. In honor of his retirement, here are six quotes by Sowell: Today he announced he’s retiring from writing his syndicated column. He is also one of our most powerful critics of the often destructive and harmful effects of liberal economic policies. Over the past few decades, economist Thomas Sowell, age 86, has been one of the most effective, yet under-appreciated, proponents of conservative and libertarian economic thought. ![]()

Playing for pizza review5/26/2023 ![]() ![]() The contrived, game-by-game (and even play-by-play) adventures of a real team in a real league that even the Italians don't care about. The book rumbles straight ahead, as simple and direct and unadorned as a fullback pushing up the middle for a three-yard gain. The suspense builds as the veteran Grisham reader waits for the surprising plot turn, or the overlooked character detail on which the story will pivot, or the unveiling of a mystery begging to be solved. Unfortunately, neglected the primary duty of the storyteller, which is to tell a story. What could have been a painful exile for a disgraced American quarterback becomes a delightfully unexpected homecoming. He also has a penchant for humorous dialogue. Grisham is a storyteller who keeps the narrative flowing at a swift pace. ![]()

Kon tiki 19475/26/2023 ![]() “If the wind, the current and the waves come from the east, then the people must have come from that direction as well.” He confidently stated and this soon became his life’s purpose: he wanted to prove that the first Polynesians arrived from South America. So as such, they should have come from the west, but the more Thor looked to the east, the more he thought that maybe the anthropologists had got it wrong. ![]() ![]() However, the commonly held theory at the time was that the Polynesians migrated from Asia. He listened to the old men telling stories about the god Tiki, who came from the sea, ‘where the sun rises’. He could not help but notice that the wind and waves were coming, relentlessly, from the east. In one of his books he describes how he sat for days on its eastern shore watching the waves crashing onto the cliffs. He travelled frequently to the South Pacific and even lived for a while on the Marquesan island of Fatu Hiva. The mastermind behind this famous undertaking was Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian anthropologist who took a great interest in Polynesia and its origins. ![]() One of the greatest of these is surely the story of the raft Kon-Tiki. The history of the sea is peppered with many stories of great seamanship and inspired journeys. ![]() |
